Tango Classes in Chania: What You Need to Know Before You Start

If you're thinking about starting tango, it's natural to have questions. Do you need to come with a partner? Is there a particular age to start? Do you need to know how to dance already? What shoes do you need, and what exactly happens in your first class?

The answer to most of these questions is simpler than you might think. You don't need any previous experience, and you don't need to know any steps before you start.

If you're in Chania and you're thinking about discovering tango, this guide will help you know what to expect before your first class.

Do I Need Any Previous Experience?

No. Beginner classes are designed specifically for people who have never danced tango before.

At the beginning, it doesn't matter how many steps you know. You gradually learn fundamental principles such as walking, balance, the embrace, musicality and, most importantly, communication with the person you're dancing with.

Tango is an improvised dance. This means that the goal is not simply to memorise a sequence of figures, but to learn how to communicate through movement and music.

Do I Need to Come with a Partner?

No. You can start tango without a partner.

During classes, exercises and partner changes can give students the opportunity to dance with different people. This helps develop the communication and adaptability that are essential to social tango.

Of course, if you'd like to start with a friend or partner, you can come together.

Is There a Right Age to Start Tango?

There is no specific age at which you “should” start tango.

Social tango is danced by people of different ages and can be adapted to each person's abilities and experience.

More important than age is the desire to learn, listen to the music and communicate with another person through movement.

What Should I Wear to My First Class?

You don't need special clothes or tango shoes for your first class.

Choose clothes that make you feel comfortable and allow you to move freely. For shoes, choose something secure that stays firmly on your feet and allows you to move without difficulty.

If you continue dancing, you can later choose shoes specifically designed for tango.

What Will I Learn in My First Classes?

Your first classes create the foundations on which your dancing will develop.

You'll begin to explore walking, posture, the embrace, balance, rhythm and the way two people can move together without following a memorised choreography.

Gradually, you'll discover that in tango, even a simple step can feel different depending on the music and the person you're dancing with.

What Are the Leader and Follower Roles?

In tango, there are two different roles: leader and follower.

The leader proposes movement and direction through the couple's communication, while the follower perceives that proposal and responds to it.

However, this doesn't mean that one person “creates” the dance while the other simply follows. Tango is created through continuous communication between both dancers.

The roles don't need to be determined by gender, and dancers can choose to learn both roles if they wish.

From the Class to the Práctica

The class is the beginning. But developing your dancing also requires practice.

A práctica is a more relaxed environment where you can explore what you've learned, repeat something you find difficult and dance with different people.

It's also a great way to start getting to know the tango community before attending a social dance event.

And Then Comes the Milonga

The milonga is the social side of tango: the event where people come together to dance.

This is where what you learn in class and explore during a práctica finds its real purpose. There is no choreography. Each dance is created in the moment through the music and the communication between two people.

If you'd like to learn how a milonga works, we've prepared a detailed guide for your first visit.
