Tango Práctica: What It Is and Why It’s Important for Your Development

When you start tango, classes are only one part of the process. To really begin to understand movement, communication and music, you need time to try things out, repeat them and explore what you are learning.

That is the role of the práctica.

A práctica is a space for practice, but at the same time it can become the bridge between classes and the social dancing of the milonga.

What Is a Práctica in Tango?

A práctica is a gathering mainly dedicated to practising tango.

In a class, the teacher introduces and explains specific concepts, techniques or exercises. At a práctica, you have more freedom to work on what you have already learned.

You can repeat a movement, explore different possibilities, work on your embrace or your walk, and spend time on something you find challenging.

What Is the Difference Between a Class and a Práctica?

A class usually has a specific structure and guidance. A práctica is more of a space for individual and shared exploration.

You don't need to perform an entire sequence of movements “correctly”. You can stop, try something again, discuss it with the person you're dancing with and explore different solutions.

This opportunity for repetition is particularly important because many tango concepts cannot be fully understood simply by hearing about them once in a class. We need to experience them through the body and through communication with another person.

What Is the Difference Between a Práctica and a Milonga?

The main difference is their purpose.

At a práctica, the main purpose is practice. You can stop in the middle of a dance, repeat a movement, discuss something or try it again.

At a milonga, the main purpose is social dancing. The dance floor has its own flow, and dancers try to move without disrupting the other couples.

That's why the práctica is such a useful intermediate step: it allows you to explore and practise before using what you've learned on the social dance floor.

Do I Need to Be an Advanced Dancer to Attend a Práctica?

No. A práctica can be particularly useful when you're still taking your first steps in tango.

Beginners need time to become familiar with walking, balance, the embrace, rhythm and communication with different people.

You don't need to know many figures. Even practising a simple walk to the music can offer you much more than constantly trying to learn new movements.

Do I Need to Come with a Partner?

Not necessarily.

A práctica is also an opportunity to dance and practise with different people. This can help you understand whether your communication is truly clear or whether it only works with one particular partner.

Of course, if you'd like to work on something specific with the person you take classes with or dance with most often, you can come together.

What Can I Practise at a Práctica?

Almost anything related to your dancing.

You can work on your walk, balance, embrace, connection, musicality, quality of movement or a specific idea you learned in class.

You can also simply dance.

A práctica doesn't have to turn into a technical exercise every time. Dancing freely with different people is also an important form of practice.

Why Is It Important to Dance with Different People?

Everyone moves, perceives and communicates a little differently.

When we constantly dance with the same person, we may develop a shared code that works very well between us, but not necessarily with everyone else

.

By dancing with different people, we learn to listen better, adapt and communicate more clearly.

And that is at the heart of social tango.

From the Práctica to the Milonga

Over time, things that require thought and repetition during a práctica begin to feel more natural.

You no longer need to constantly think, “What is the next step?” You begin to have more space to listen to the music, feel the embrace and communicate with the person you're dancing with.

That is one of the main purposes of practice: not to collect as many figures as possible, but to gain greater freedom when we dance.
